Arash Fakhim
If people expect artists to make sculptures out of plaster, I want to research it. Why do we choose plaster? Perhaps quite cliché, but it's the eye of the "migrant". As an outsider, you look at it from another angle. Why do people do certain things and why is it self-evident?
Arash Fakhim (1987, Iran) is a multimedia artist raised in the Netherlands, currently living and working in Amsterdam. A recurring theme in the practice of Arash Fakhim is the will to clash with the imposed rules of the medium painting. With the tendency to deviate from the flat surface, atypical materials and methods he searches for possibilities to arrive at what can be seen as ‘painting’. Inside the studio Fakhim currently focuses on the epoxy panels in which he composes and compresses several layers of plastic bags. The lines and folds form picturesque compositions but at the same time show the process that precedes the action in which the light plastic container transforms into a solidified panel. Although Fakhim’s praxis contains gestures and elements of painting yet it is mainly concerned with dialogues between the object, the subject and their shifting relations.
