Anna Bjerger
Through painting I am able to shift the hierarchy in the image and bring forward a different version of the recorded instant.
Anna Bjerger
Anna Bjerger’s (1973 Sweden) works are based on extracts from books and manuals she bought at thrift shops and yard sales. Her works evoke a feeling of familiarity or anonymity. Bjerger takes the images from their external context, creating space for other stories and other associations in our imagination. Bjerger applies her paint to an aluminum background using strong, broad brush strokes. The paint is applied "wet in wet" which gives the painting a spontaneous almost sketchy character. Drops of thickly-applied layers of paint run over each other. The speed with which Bjerger paints is reminiscent of the directness of photography, while the layers of paint emphasize the transforming character of painting.
