Ana Cardoso

Ana Cardoso (1978, Portugal) sews together several lengths of cloth to become artistic media. She does this in the same, standardized manner for each of her series. She then colors in shapes on the cloths that are geometrically linear and that mirror and repeat each other. Cardoso plays with the double function of paintings, as objects in themselves and as carriers of meaning. This way, she creates spaces within which references have free rein. Cardoso’s work bears a relation to art history, but at the same time resists any relation with the art-historical past. In her work, Cardoso makes references to Modernism, to flags or to patterns in posters, but not in an extremely obvious manner, to keep open the channels of dialogue with the past.
