Agnes Waruguru

I would say my practice is centered around me trying to understand myself, the world I’m living in, where I’ve come from and how my identity is affected by all the places that I navigate and move through.
Agnes Warunguru in an interview with Thadde Tewa on Africanah.org

In her multidisciplinary work, Agnes Waruguru (1994, Nairobi) combines textiles, painting, clay and beads. In an experimental process she combines materials that are reminiscent of traditions and objects from her motherland Kenya and her experiences with the culture. Repetition and improvisation are central to these creative processes. The apparently abstract installations refer to her personal perspectives on being human, family, nature and identity. They invite you to look slowly, fantasize and discover.
