Central to the work of Michel François (1956, Belgium) is the generation of new meanings for familiar images and everyday situations. François' registrations are not only characterized by careful observation and almost poetic associations. They are portraits of ordinary life; working people and playing children, in which the recording of change and movement are characteristic of his oeuvre. François became internationally known for his participation in the Documenta IX in 1992, the Sao Paulo Biennale in 1996 and the Venice Biennale in 1999.
