Zebedee Jones

This rough, gray and square piece was made by the artist Zebedee Jones (1970, UK). His monochrome paintings range from hues of brown, blue, and gray to black. Thick layers of oil paints are applied on top of each other. Jones scrapes, combs, molds and shaves away these layers, creating a furrowed field of horizontal or vertical lines which reflect light and cast shadows. In conjunction with the richly textured edges, the painting lifts itself into the third dimension, inviting the viewer to plumb its depths.
