Wouter Dam

What appeals to me are the repetitions and the subtle changes. Within a fixed theme or pattern, many variations are possible. My works are of course similar, but it is precisely the surprise within them that can create a wow effect.

For forty years, Wouter Dam (1957, the Netherlands) has held a prominent position among Dutch's ceramicists. While rooted in the pottery tradition, he has forged his own distinctive path, exploring the essence of space within ceramic objects. Rather than focusing on decoration, Dam's artistic attention is devoted to form. Beginning with a pot or vase, he deconstructs and reassembles, meticulously crafting a subtle interplay of lines and planes. His chosen medium for adding color is engobes—a blend of clay powder and pigments—applied layer by layer until achieving the desired hue. Often opting for a single color, Dam occasionally introduces a second shade, accentuating the vital lines of his creations.
