Winnie Teschmacher

When I make a sculpture, I always begin with a great abundance, the trick being to end up with virtually nothing.

Winnie Teschmacher’s (1958, the Netherlands) motto is ‘less is more’, with her glass sculptures characterised by their predilection for simplicity and perfection. Teschmacher is more concerned with the beauty which comes from within, out of the depth and emptiness. In her work, she reaches inside for a purity of form that goes beyond appearance or function. She is not working with glass as an object, but using it to shape light and space.

Her approach is grounded in decades of hands-on experience with glass. She has run her own studio, worked as a designer within an industrial glass context, and collaborated closely with skilled glassmakers in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, regions known for their strong glassmaking traditions. Teschmacher produces key elements herself and remains closely involved at every stage, from drawing and shaping to finishing.
