Tim Ayres

I’m always interested in how what we perceive in our peripheral vision is possibly central to our perception.

In his work, Tim Ayres (1965, UK) researches words, shapes, and color. He manipulates letters, breaks off sentences arbitrarily or shifts words, enhancing the content or deliberately distorting it. He often uses scraps of text from pop songs, novels, conversations, or expressions, bringing us into his own mental world. Using adhesive templates he sets the texts on an MDF panel, with a final coat of varnish sometimes giving the work a sheen that mirrors the surrounding. The reflective effect and the size cause the observer to ‘enter into’ the work.
