Thom van Rijckevorsel
What’s it like to be human in a time of great technological development, in which physical and digital reality, matter and image, fact and fiction and people and technology increasingly merge into one another? Can you still have grip on such a reality and what is grip anyway? With these questions in mind I make video, sculpture and drawings.

The sense of unease one experiences when viewing the work of Thomas van Rijckevorsel (1977, the Netherlands) is the product of our own well-trained perception; that first glance so heavily laden with the habitual. In his work, the shapes and patterns, the colors, the materials and proportions ingrained in us as expectations are tensely set askew, and it’s only upon closer inspection—subjecting our expectations to analysis—that we understand the origin of our unease, thus understanding too, something of that which underlies our perception.
