Sylvie Zijlmans
In her work Sylvie Zijlmans (1964, The Netherlands) exhibits a world uncannily similar to reality, but one that, nevertheless, remains puzzling and foreboding for the viewer. Her photographs and installations are often a response to current events. This is how Zijlmans tries to comprehend, through an image to which she can relate, events too great to be easily understood. The result is a fabulous visual language. In Zijlmans’ work, title and image are inextricably linked. It provides the viewer with some purchase when engaging the narrative she weaves, even though the link will just as often arise intuitively and associatively. Besides creating autonomous works, Zijlmans has been in an ongoing collaboration with Hewald Jongenelis since 1993.
