Shamilla Aasha
What I’m striving for in my work is authenticity in terms of what my narrative is.. you want to be able to tell the truth… I like my work to go beyond the pretty.
Shamilla Aasha (1977, Zimbabwe) is recognized for her innovative textile-based works that seamlessly weave together cultural narratives and personal identity. Emerging with renewed artistic vision in 2018, Aasha transforms found objects and textiles into sacred soft sculptures and wall-hangings that speak to her multicultural Shona and Indian heritage. Through intricate stitching, layering, and pattern-making, she creates a distinctive palmistry language that explores the intersection of traditional practices, spirituality, and female identity in contemporary Zimbabwean society. Aasha's defiance of artistic categorization, merging tapestry, weaving, and painting traditions—reflects her nuanced exploration of cultural synthesis and identity formation. Her profound artistic sensibility combines technical precision with emotional depth, creating works that honor tradition while boldly charting new artistic territory.
