Maurice Scheltens

Maurice Scheltens’ (1972, the Netherlands) still lifes show us luxury and discomfort. Form loses its function in his work as objects—remote controls, haute couture dresses and cut-outs of all manner of food—strike hesitant poses. The reality which lies at the form’s base is rendered visible, and even though Scheltens’ work may on occasion elicit a smile, humor is only a small part of the alienating distance in his photographs.
