Cristina Lucas

I never felt comfortable with just one subject. Each idea requires its own language: sometimes photography allows me to dialogue with documentary objectivity, while drawing or video offer a possibility of distortion, manipulation of time and perception.

Cristina Lucas (1973, Spain) is a multidisciplinary artist who works with photography, video, drawing, sculpture, and installation to reflect on the structures of power. Her works are often openly critical, while also serious, playful, and humorous. Lucas captivates viewers with beautiful, theatrical images, yet she does not shy away from holding up a less flattering mirror to her audience. In her hands, social, political, historical, and cultural clichés are dismantled with precision and inevitability.

Central themes in her work include the role of women, religion, the patriarchal system in society or the global supremacy of the West play an important role. Man’s desire to control nature is also a recurring concern. Through her work, Lucas shows us that the current economic system, far from being an abstract concept, affects us in a very direct way, physically and materially, leaving lasting marks on our bodies and landscapes.
