Marloes Roeper
Marloes Roeper (1998, Netherlands) is intrigued by the question of what it is exactly that we see when looking at a painting. The objects, shapes and compositions she finds while closely observing her daily environment evoke her desire to paint. This desire is not necessarily triggered by the beauty within these findings, but rather by the fascination for the way in which we recognise, or even attach meaning, to nothing but a few brushstrokes (or their absence) on the canvas.
The paintings seem to show recognizable subjects: windows, a football field, electricity poles, stripped down to their bare essence. For Roeper the painterly challenge is to achieve figuration with the most efficient means. Roeper's work questions what we actually need to create an image, beyond frame, canvas and paint.
