Maartje Folkeringa
I work process-orientated and associative. In my creative process I play table tennis and the work-in-progress plays back. Ultimately, autonomous sculptures are created that are recognizable and not always traceable.
Maartje Folkeringa
Maartje Folkeringa (1978, the Netherlands) makes heavy-looking sculptures, which on closer examination prove to be light as a feather. She works with materials such as foam, wax and paint. Her work focuses on underlying tensions in society, manipulation, non-verbal communication and unwritten rules within social groups. She also looks at the visual aspects with which people create their identity, the status symbols and materialism with which people distinguish themselves. Folkeringa's work reflects contradictions, both in form and content. There is a tension between sketchiness and precision, between black and white, between figuration and abstraction.
