Herbert Brandl

Large, colored canvases comprise Herbert Brandl's (1959, Austria) body of work, oscillating between abstraction and representation. The landscape plays a dominant role in Brandl’s monumental works, although it is not always a landscape readily recognizable as such. The familiar images and shapes that can be made out in Brandl’s work are not the artist’s actual subject. For Brandl, the essence of an artwork lies in the act of painting: in the materiality and colors of the paint. Brandl paints rough brush strokes which results in an endless play of light, color and material.
