Gilleam Trapenberg

In his photographic work, Gilleam Trapenberg captures his personal experience of life on Curaçao, the place where he was born and raised. He combines personal memories of the island with a contemplative view, subtly highlighting the colonial legacy that is deeply intertwined with the local culture. Trapenberg wants to make the soul of Curaçao palpable through the people and their environment. He primarily photographs the inhabitants and the way they live and express their identity. In doing so, he finds it important to go beyond the tourist cliché image of the island. In his work we see a beautiful, idiosyncratic and personal image of Curaçao. Thereby you can taste the position of the young photographer who lives between two worlds. The world of homeland Curaçao, and the world of the Netherlands, where he now lives and works.
