Ellert Haitjema (1958, the Netherlands) has found a way to make art out of time, or to be more precise, out of that strange beauty possessed by objects marked with the many traces time may leave—fading hues, accumulations, oxidation, and, most of all, the various uses and constellations of a storied past. But these elements, and that unique aesthetic to which we are all inherently sensitive, aren’t used to create wholly melancholy, nostalgic or even retrospective work. Instead, Haitjema elevates them, imbuing them into unique objects, both vibrantly alive and with great presence.
