Dieuwke Spaans

Many of Dieuwke Spaans’ (1973, the Netherlands) collages read like an abandoned memory; its contours have survived but any sense of self has dissipated. Worn and torn pages remain without writing but that empty space is filled instead with shifting perspectives and a man-marked past, which is finally understood to be divisible only in the mind. Spaans conditions the viewer to experience falling as a freedom.
