Friso Keuris
In addition to his work as a portrait photographer, Friso Keuris (1963, the Netherlands) creates autonomous work which might best be described as a single word in a much larger story. They are quiet images of places, people and objects, each playing some part in world history. We encounter world history as a large, sweeping motion: cultural and political movements, rulers and wars sweeping art and technology across continents. But there is something of an illusion in this grandeur. One forgets the countless components comprising the motion, remaining once attention fades. It is these components, in this state, that Keuris shows us.
