Cas Oorthuys

He never left home without a camera - usually with two or three and sometimes more of them around his neck. By the time he died, he had accumulated an archive of almost half a million photographs.

The extensive oeuvre of Cas Oorthuys (1908-1975, the Netherlands) was inspired by the international avant-garde within art. In his early work, influences from among others De Stijl, the Bauhaus, and Russian films can be clearly seen through the use of diagonal compositions and sharp representations of the subject. These influences remained visible throughout his career. For many, he determined the image of the Netherlands, capturing the optimism of reconstruction like no other.
