Bob Eikelboom

The magnets are an answer to and question concerning the role of the artist.
Bob Eikelboom

Bob Eikelboom (1991, the Netherlands) is a young talent known for his ‘magnet paintings’ in which he plays with the limitations of the flat painterly surface and with the viewer’s perception of artistic originality through the inclusion of magnetized collage elements. The viewer’s realization that the magnets can in fact be repositioned gives rise namely to questions regarding the originality of the artwork itself. Magnets in the form of a ship, eye and hands juxtapose the painted surface upon which the sea has taken prime position over the sky and a sinking ship for a hat perches jauntily upon the figure’s head. The result: an enigmatic work in which Eikelboom combines order and chaos, surface and structure to significant surrealistic effect.
