Bernice Nauta

I work with stories and characters from the idea of a character. That is a common thread.
Bernice Nauta, via Metropolis M, 2025

Bernice Nauta (1991, Netherlands) draws, makes films, paints, produces installations, objects and stories. In her own words, the instability of identity stands central to her practice. In recent works, installations and exhibitions she has explored this idea through subjects such as stunt doubles, the myth of echo and narcissus and self appropriation.

Questions of identity, and in particular the self brought Nauta to the theme of the superhero. Contemporary culture has seen many iterations of the same superhero; Superman, Batman and, in this case, Spiderman. The idea of media companies re-introducing Spiderman every so many years, changing its personality in order to fit the persona into what culture demands at a certain period, fascinates Nauta.
