Bernhard Heesen

I was intrigued by this strange material: hot, liquid and transparent, completely the opposite of the cold and rigid glass everyone knows.
Bernard Heesen via Art Aurea, 2016

Bernard Heesen (1958, the Netherlands), who trained as an architect, makes the glass world sing. Enormous masses of glass are loaded in and out of the kilns: bricks, goblets, children’s baths and ladies’ handbags. He wields his material like a glass anarchist. There is no limit to the size and no limit to their madness and garishness. It is a somewhat ironic game he plays with modern categories of fine art and kitsch, original and reproduction, one-of-a-kind and series, collector and consumer, and the taste of the elite and the common masses.
