Antoine Berghs

I would very much like to make something immaterial, but how do you do that? Simply by putting a thought into words it is, in sense, turned material.
Antoine Berghs via De Volkskrant, 2002

Antoine Berghs (1971, the Netherlands) prefers to describe his work as a precipitation of thoughts. Every piece enacts the search—executed in a variety of media—for an ‘existence’ beyond the solely material.

His paintings suggest a compressed cosmos in which lines, accumulations and flows feel their way past graffiti, Aeolian sands and a Borgesian cartography, in which precision unavoidably transforms into abstraction.
