Aline Thomassen

In my work I always look for the basis of being human, the original, the emotional forces that are universal and lie behind all political, relational and social events.

Aline Thomassen (1964, Netherlands) is known for her powerful, large scale watercolours and drawings, often portraying raw and emotional depictions of the female body. Her works blend human figures with elements from nature and anatomy such as animals, plants, and internal organs, forming poetic and sometimes unsettling compositions. These mysterious images suggest a deep, almost cosmic connection between body and mind.

Inspired by cultural and psychological realities, Thomassen’s female nudes serve as landscapes of emotion, expressing intense and often unspoken feelings. Her figures challenge traditional portrayals of women in art history and media, confronting viewers with alternative images of strength, pain, love, and survival. For over twenty years, Thomassen has worked regularly in Morocco, where she draws inspiration from the resilience and vitality of Arab women. While rooted in her own perspective as a woman, her themes such as identity, freedom, loss, and the human condition resonate universally.
