Alejandra Venegas

Alejandra Venegas (1986, Mexico) is a contemporary painter whose medium of choice is hand-carved wood, a unique surface for painting. Her studio is located in the mountains on the outskirts of Mexico City, where she engages in a dialogue with traditional Chinese painting style Shan sui. Using gouache or oil, she colors the carved landscape scenes made from various types of native Mexican wood. Venegas deliberately contrasts the natural warm tones of the wood with stridently bright shades to create a striking effect. By incorporating the natural irregularities of the wood, her work transcends beyond a mere painted panel, giving it a distinct sculptural quality.
