Aernout Mik

The behavior, presence, movement and gestures of bodies and what happens between people and in space, has always been the core of my work, including how all these aspects combine in the body.

Aernout Mik (1962, Netherlands) is internationally acclaimed for his video installations. These installations create situations that chart the formation and transformation of group behaviour. The artist draws parallels between structures like religious movements and our belief in the market economy to create spaces for the viewer to contemplate their position between malfunctioning systems.

His work frequently addresses themes such as threat, fear, poverty, social exclusion, war, and xenophobia. Mik’s videos are characterised by the absence of a conventional narrative, allowing meaning to emerge through atmosphere, gesture, and collective presence rather than linear storytelling.
