Zonder titel, 1992

eight-color silk screen, matte varnish

86 x 62 cm

This work, consisting of photographic images of matt stones against a glossy salmon pink background, stands in stark contrast to the infamous sharks and other, frequently grisly, objects suspended in formaldehyde for which bad boy of British art Damien Hirst (1964, United Kingdom) gained international acclaim. This work is one of Hirst’s first prints. Hirst found the stones on King’s Road, London and laid them on a sheet of pink paper in a form that reminded him of an illustration from a school geography textbook. The grid, used as a means for structuring and organizing images, became an important theme in much of Hirst’s later work.
