Han Schuil (1958, the Netherlands) is an artist who refuses to be defined, following instead whatever runs through his mind. With an impressive intensity what moves him is captured in brightly and powerfully colored paintings and sculptures. In 'Untitled' (1998), the colors so typical of his work are intensified even more by having been applied to aluminum. It is a work that calls out to us in the language of the city and industry, of the traffic signs you read without thought and the advertisements unconsciously shaping our thoughts—but the language has lost its context, and its meaning is thus set free.
