Large-scale architectural installations in derelict buildings scheduled for demolition are central to the artistic practice of Marjan Teeuwen (1953, the Netherlands). Teeuwen breaks down the ceilings, walls and floors of chosen houses and rearranges the resulting debris into architectural sculptures, thus creating new vistas and rhythms within the existing structure. Autonomous photo pieces, such as ‘Verwoest Huis Bloemhof 2’, form the only remaining traces of Teeuwen’s interventions after the wrecking ball has done its work. They function as lieux de mémoire, speaking to the dialectical forces of construction, destruction, order and chaos Teeuwen considers intrinsic to the human condition.
