Lennart Lahuis

Parrot, 2015

inkjetprint on wood, beeswax, paper on glass

50 x 35 cm

The titles of these works by Lennart Lahuis (1986, the Netherlands) are distinctly puzzling when compared to the corresponding images. Lahuis takes standard, oftentimes cliché, reproductions of images that come with store-bought picture frames as the starting point for his work. After transferring the stock image to a new carrier, Lahuis covers it with glass and paper rendered semi-transparent by the application of beeswax. By delaying the viewer’s access to the original picture and presenting the ‘filter’ as the image, Lahuis calls attention to media transparency and the interchangeability of images in Western visual culture.
