Oculus, 2015
rod iron (8 mm), iron sheet (9 mm)
102 x 100 x 75 cm
'Oculus' by Michael Jacklin (1956, the Netherlands) resembles an eye, but also calls planets orbiting our solar system to mind. Jacklin works almost exclusively with industrial rod iron lengths, which he cuts, bends and welds into abstract sculptures. His preference for this material stems from his fascination for iron structures in architecture and the rhythms he perceives in them. In defiance of the rigidity of his medium Jacklin’s sculptures appear airy and transparent, as if ‘drawn’ in space. A subtle play of lines and intervals occurs as you move around his work.
