Mosquitas de Luz, 2019
textile, styrofoam support, elastic and metal
17 × 29 × 12 cm
“Mosquitas de Luz” (light bugs) is part of a broader series that seeks to reinterpret bijouterie objects that are placed on jewel cases. This piece in particular does not use a proper display case. Instead, it takes the shape of a mirror covered in textile, but not a beauty mirror: a car mirror.
The piece frames two interests: a drawing made on the textile that reveals domestic scenes in which art objects are placed and the idea of dressing up the object itself with a costume, giving the repurposed object an industrial design rebirth.
The drawing itself combines design icons, such as lamps and chairs, and sets the stage to display artworks: one is a generic modern-inspired piece and the other one is one is an actual piece by Navas herself. It’s nothing short from a “tasteful” or “high-end” decoration with the kind of objects used by the artist to rethink the place of modern design in our daily lives.
