George Korsmit (1953, the Netherlands) has made chance the ordering principle of his work. The structure - categorically not composition - of his works follows a strict sequence of chance-driven actions. Korsmit determines the number of sides to his works’ characteristic irregular patches of color by rolling a dice. Coloration is determined in an equally random manner by blind selection from a box of color chips. Korsmit thus surrenders artistic subjectivity to what he calls ‘ritualistic chance.’ The result: colorful, pulsating flat surfaces that provide no resting place for the eye.
