wooden room divider, casein and pigments
183 × 120 × 2 cm
You can wander endlessly in the room dividers of Fiona Lutjenhuis (1991, Netherlands). In the dizzying stack of images, a family portrait of the artist unfolds. Using casein and raw pigments, Lutjenhuis painted a dream in which her sisters appear, along with a scene of her parents watching the eclipse in their backyard. The room where she sits with her sisters is filled to the brim with bonsai trees, which seem to continue growing while their gazes are focused on the Mudras on the table.
Lutjenhuis creates illustrations, publications, paintings, and animations in which she makes visible the religious heritage of her youth: from installations to artist books, and from commissioned works to self-initiated projects. Her speculative visual language fits seamlessly into contemporary discourse on a post-positivist society. In each image, the humor and courage required to lose oneself without prejudice in other worlds can be seen.
