De schaduw van de ellips, 2014
oil paint, collage on canvas
30 x 40 cm
These small-scale works by Reinier Lucassen (1939, the Netherlands) call attention to topical issues that are significantly larger in scale: the fate and future of refugees from war-torn nations who have been driven from their homelands. These works are typical of Lucassen in their combination of figuration and abstraction and in their use of letters and numbers. Art, according to Lucassen, is his personal system for creating order and harmony in a chaotic world. It is “a way of giving society and individuals a face.”
