Alterscapes: Playground features Otobong Nkanga (1974, Nigeria) seated with a barren landscape draped over her knees, like an animal skin taken as a hunting trophy – a clear reference to the dramatically changing landscape of her homeland Nigeria, a country rich in oil. Nkanga’s work takes memory, environment and the postcolonial history of her homeland as its themes. With this work she reflects on how humankind has economically and politically reshaped landscapes, oftentimes unthinkingly, using their resources for short-term commercial gain.
