Vera Gulikers
I am looking for a way to relate to painting by painting. In painting I investigate a combination of old, historical techniques and fast, contemporary techniques and material.
Vera Gulikers
Vera Gulikers’s (1991, Nederland) work stands out for its tempting pastel color fields and its specific use of materials. Gulikers’s paintings are made with egg-tempera, a centuries-old recipe with egg yolk as a binder. While working on a new painting, Gulikers spilled a bucket of tempera paint and had to mop it up. She enjoyed the unplanned and unforced result of the half cleaned surface and decided to search for that directness in her tempera paintings as well. In her painting series ‘Test canvases’ Gulikers rubbed away the paint stains on her canvases with a variety of cleaning products, resulting in vivacious abstractions.
