Martin Gerwers
The work of Martin Gerwers (1963, Germany) exists at the intersection of painting, sculpture, and relief. Through large-scale, geometric constructions, Gerwers explores the dynamic relationship between color and space. His spatially assertive objects—often composed of triangular wooden forms—require movement from the viewer, unfolding through shifting perspectives and continually altering visual impressions. Gerwers’ painted objects activate their surroundings with dramatic contrasts of light and dark, bold color planes, and subtle tonal transitions. Drawing on traditions of Mondrian and American Color Field painting, his work engages perception as an active process, challenging the immediacy of image recognition and fixed form.
