Keetje Mans

Keetje Mans (1979, the Netherlands) creates paintings, drawings, installations, objects, and textiles in which reality and fantasy seamlessly merge. She paints directly onto the canvas without preliminary sketches, embracing what she describes as “a leap without landing.” Her compositions are populated by lush plants, decorative interiors, animals, and carefully arranged objects that initially suggest comfort and familiarity. Looking closer, however, subtle tensions emerge: flowers seem to move, objects take on a life of their own, and orderly domestic spaces become unpredictable.

Mans draws inspiration from childhood travels to Costa Rica and Curaçao, where vibrant folk art, tropical vegetation, and a freer way of life left a lasting impression. These influences intersect with memories of Dutch forests and domestic interiors. Working intuitively and directly, she builds her paintings in dialogue with the canvas, creating richly layered scenes that function less as representations of places than as reflections of psychological states, where desire, memory, comfort, and unease coexist. Painted primarily in oil directly from the tube, her compositions are characterized by muted colors and darker tones that lend even the most familiar scenes an underlying sense of mystery.
