Illustrating my political opinion with my personal handwriting and style is an individual act—however it participates in the collective action which [is] shaped by millions of people.

It is somewhat sad to notice the platitudes accompanying so many renditions—in so many different media—of history. To present a life lived as a simple sequence of high-impact events is, in a sense, to negate it. In her work, Golrokh Nafisi (1981, Iran) shows herself to be deeply aware of this fact, gathering in every piece multiple threads of memory, historical events and the frameworks which shape our interpretation and recollection; threads which weave through different times, places, ideologies, and through every individual who views her work, displaying a kind of beauty which is utterly human.
