Eelco Brand
Imitation is inextricably linked to being human.
Eelco Brand
Eelco Brand (1969, the Netherlands) creates digitally animated make-believe worlds. In BL.movi, two amorphous blue shapes in a forest clearing engage in a fantastical pas de deux, continuously melting together and separating. The work’s blue protagonists stand like sentinels in front of the screen waiting to re-enter their natural habitat, forming an intriguing juxtaposition between image and matter. Working from an old bubblegum factory in Breda, Brand acts out the role of creator of a hyperreal universe creating technically perfect simulacra of an imperfect nature constantly threatened by human intervention. For Brand this is a way of coming to terms with reality whilst simultaneously reaching for the impossible.
