Céline van Balen

A photo is never a print of reality. I have chosen this photo, it is my vision.
Céline van Balen, Volkskrant, 21 februari 2002

The work of photographer Céline van Balen (1965, The Netherlands - 2023, The Netherlands) embody a strong social commitment. In large cities, some people experience a feeling of loss and loneliness. Balen records this social problem in her photos: disorientation and social isolation because of the anonymity of the city. She photographs the subjects without manipulating anything: a dent in a dry lip, a birthmark, a scar: everything is visible in Van Balen's work. Still, the photos always remain a subjective image chosen by the photographer.
