Camile Smeets
For me, to create sculptures is to dream with clay. The intangible made tangible before it fades away.

Camile Smeets (1983, the Netherlands) creates sculptures at once figurative and alienating, surrealist even. They’re filled with references to mythology and compound a personal and collective visual language. As she makes her work, she always keeps these words by Joseph Campbell (1904–1987) in mind: ‘Follow your Bliss and the Universe will open Doors where there were only Walls.’ Smeets’ explicitly figurative work fits into the miniature tradition the British have revisited. In contrast to earlier times, they are no longer merely trinkets for the mantelpiece but curious and bizarre visualizations of a mysterious world instead.
